Welcome back Book City! Book City has returned to Bloor West Village after having vacated a few years back. I am reluctant to draw a direct co-relation between its return and the demise of the Chapter’s that was located at the old Runnymede Theatre – which I have to admit I will miss – but with competition from the book and lifestyle behemoth no longer in the area, Book City will hopefully stand a chance of remaining in the neighbourhood for a long time to come.
I am a fan of all bookstores so to see that Indigo is choosing to close some of its major Toronto locations under satellite brands (The World’s Biggest Bookstore and Chapter’s at Richmond) these moves will hopefully open up those areas for independent booksellers and smaller chains such as Book City.
Though I don’t spend as much time in the area anymore, I was sad to see the Annex location of Book City close. It used to be one of my walk destinations when I lived in the area. I don’t want to end this post on a sad note so I will remind you that it is summer in Toronto and that Bloor West has a new place to buy books which you can then read in High Park, which is nearby, and get lost in the worlds between the covers of your favourite story.
Unless you like e-readers…at least you are still reading…
Either way, enjoy!
