From what I understand this is a pretty popular quote so…I guess I’ll just add to it’s popularity.

“Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men and women with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not, the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “press on” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.”

-Calvin Coolidge

While our politics don’t jive, I have to give Mr. Coolidge a nod on this one.

One response to “Persistence

Absolutely brilliant quote by Mr. Coolidge. We had just had a discussion on a bit of writing I based on watching Georges St. Pierre’s mental toughness and the profound effect it had on me. He comes from the school of thought that suggests that the difference between a martial artist and a fighter is that the martial artist trains everyday. It’s his/her way of life.

I completely support this ideology and find it applicable to any art. I find it also works as a metaphor for life in general. If I work hard every day; if i’m persistent I will at the very least move forward. However stagnant my pace may seem. And if I’m even more specific with my area of persistance e.g. writing, working out, general growth than not only will I achieve more in my chosen persistencies but it will slowly but surely become a way of life.
