I went into this movie expecting it to be different from a typical romantic comedy. I believe the term “mumblecore” is floating around the ether to describe such fare but whatevs.
With respect to plot, it really wasn’t any different than any other RomCom but that’s okay because as I’ve posted there are really only about 3 7-20 plots that any writer can pick and choose from. What was thankfully different and what made me want to watch it again – because it was definitely endearing – was the way it was filmed. Of course the dialogue and “rawness” (if I can use that term…it seems cheesy) add to it, but I felt like I was a fly on the wall in these character’s lives. Maybe that’s the “mumblecore” aspect or whatever, but it was a pretty epic experience.
Overview:
-Marisa Tomei and Jonah Hill’s characters’ relationship is odd and not entirely explained for it to make sense, but Jonah Hill plays the character weird enough that it seems believable enough
-JCR plays a loser epically well. When his character refers to himself as “Shrek” you almost want to give him a hug yourself
-JCR and Tomei work as a middle “aging” couple, although his bit of stalking at the beginning needed to be changed I think.
Overall: 8.0/10
